Received: 25 June 2008 Accepted: 19 November 2008 Abstract: Objective: Recent studies have demonstrated that various human viruses, especially cytomegalovirus (HCMV) and Epstein Barr virus (EBV-1) seem to play a part in the pathogenesis of human periodontitis. The aim of this investigation was to evaluate the subgingival presence of HCMV and EBV in patients with aggressive periodontitis (AgP). Materials and Methods: A polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method determined the presence of HCMV and EBV. Subgingival Plaque samples from 26 conductive AgP patients were collected. Results: HCMV was detected in 27% of AgP patients and EBV-1 in 25% of AgP patients. HCMV and EBV-1 co-infection was detected in 52% of AgP patients. Conclusion: These findings indicated that subgingival presence of EBV-1 and HCMV is associated with aggressive periodontitis, and co-infection with HMCV and EBV appears to be particularly deleterious to periodontal health.

Sero-prevalence of Herpes Simplex and Epstein Barr Viruses in HIV positive patients in Tehran
Abstract Background and Aims: The burden of HIV infection and disease continues to be a major global public health concern all over the world. This study was conducted to measure IgG antibody against EBV viral capsid antigen (EBV-VCA IgG), Herpes Simplex Type1, and 2 to determine the seroprevalence of this infection in HIV-positive population. Materials and Methods: A Cross-sectional st...
متن کاملHerpesviruses in chronic and aggressive periodontitis patients in an Indian population.
Many recent studies have assessed the prevalence and role of herpesviruses in the etiopathogenesis of periodontal diseases, which has led to the realization of intricate interactions between viruses and bacteria within periodontal pockets. It has also been shown that the occurrence of herpesviruses may vary depending upon the age of the patient and the race of the population studied. Thus, the ...

Background: The present study sought to investigate molecular evidence for association between the presence of herpes simplex virus (HSV), cytomegalovirus (CMV), and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) in CRC and colorectal polyp by using the PCR method in Iran. Methods: In this analytical case-control study, we selected 15 patients with CRC, 20 patients with colorectal polyp, and 35 patients without mali...
متن کاملStudy on the association of Epstein - Barr virus with breast cancer in Khorramabad breast cancer patients, Iran
Background: Breast cancer is one of the most common malignancies in the world, and early diagnosis of this cancer is a key factor in its treatment. This cancer is a multi-stage disease, in which viruses can play a role. EBV is known as an important factor in the development of some human cancers. Therefore, this study was conducted to determine the relationship between Epstein-Barr virus, EBV, ...

Aim: Leukemia targets are one of the most common childhood malignancies. Epstein-Barr virus is a tumorigenic virus of the herpes family of viruses and causes primary infection in young children. The aim of this study was to evaluate the increase in NFKB expression following EBV virus and its contribution to the half-life of EBV-positive acute lymphoblastic leukemia patients. Materials and Meth...
